Style Lines reports on Karina Pires S/S 09-10
‘My latest obsession is Sydney designer Karina Pires. I can barely contain my excitement over the collection, for it seems that Karina, in some infinite, oracle-esque wisdom, has conjured it with a specificity tailored to my most demanding whims. Karina's take on the little black dress sets my mind a flutter, as the one shouldered, architectural style coupled with the soft pleating reconciles strange bedfellows - raw sex appeal and girlie charm- to create and undeniably covetable staple.’

Best ‘n’ Fresh
‘Gelato-toned silk chiffon torn into panels and the lovingly crafted into towering maxi dresses and shift tops forms the body of second collection by Sydney-based Brazilian designer Karina Pires. Utilizing details like hand dyed lace appliqué and stands of Amazonian seeds in vibrant colours, Pires has put a spin on the traditional handicrafts of her homeland. Viva!’

Jennifer Melocco reports on new designers making a fashion grade
‘It has been a learning curve for most Australia’s top designers. Over the decades Akira Isogawa, Collette Dinnigan And Nicky Zimmermann have all honed their skills here. Karina Pires turned her back in a lucrative career in advertising to pursue her fashion ambitions. Laser-printing a mosaic pattern she embarked on an ambitious design which also involved slashing away the precious fabric to give the dress a new edge.’

KARINA PIRES BIOGRAPHY
Karina Pires was born in Brazil where she completed a bachelor's degree in Visual Communication. But her story doesn’t end there.
Her love for travels and all things beautiful found herself wandering into the fashion world across the globe, when she landed in Australia in 2000. And few years later, Karina graduated from the renowned East Sydney Fashion Design Studio. Along the way her designs and originality snapped various awards and she was also invited to debut her first collection at Australian Fashion Week 06.
Pires' collections are an eclectic mix of luxury fabrics, strong shapes and immaculate construction where her love for textiles and colour is instantly recognized. If you lust a “must-have” dress the designer also offers the luxury of limited edition pieces crafted by either Australian or Brazilian ‘artisans’.
The designer is a strong believer in the ‘art of craft, a skill she keeps close to her heart and learned to cultivate from the Brazilian culture. She is highly influenced by craft techniques such as fabric manipulation, dying, patchwork and texture. Beyond her focus on textiles and colours, the designer aims insatiably for the perfect fit in either tailoring or draping to create a modern view of womenswear.
Cementing Karina’s wares in the Australian fashion is the labels appearance in Marie Claire, Yen, Russh and Karen Magazine to name a few.
